Six candidates file to run for Aurora mayor in 2025 election

Six candidates have filed nominating petitions for the 2025 election for Aurora mayor.

Monday was the final day for filing. With six candidates for mayor, it would trigger a mayoral primary on Feb. 25, 2025.

The deadline for filing objections to any of the petitions is 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4.

There also will be six contests in seven of the open aldermanic races.

On the first day of filing, Oct. 21, three candidates filed for mayor – incumbent Richard Irvin, and challengers Ald. John Laesch, at large, and Ald. Theodoros “Ted” Mesiacos, 3rd Ward. They will be part of a lottery to determine ballot position.

Since then, three other candidates have filed for mayor: Karina Garcia, Aurora Regional Hispanic Chamber of Commerce president; Judd Lofchie, a local attorney and businessman; and Jazmine Garcia.

Having five or more candidates for one office triggers a primary, and it would be, at this point, a primary for mayor only.

That could change with the other aldermanic races if anyone files as a write-in, to the level of at least five candidates.

For alderman at large, incumbent Ron Woerman filed for a second term, to be challenged by Keith Larson and Arriana Dallmann. Woerman and Larson filed at the same time on the first day, so whose name is first on the ballot will be determined by lottery.

In the 1st Ward, incumbent Ald. Dan Barreiro filed, as did Hugo Saltijeral, Jeffrey Donelson and Ray Hull. Barreiro and Saltijeral filed on the first day, so their ballot position will be determined by lottery. While Barreiro is the incumbent, he was appointed to fill a vacancy, so he is running for his first elected term.

In the 2nd Ward, incumbent Ald. Juany Garza filed for reelection, and will be challenged by Alfonso Santoyo.

In the 4th Ward, where incumbent Ald. William Donnell has declined to run for reelection, three candidates have filed. They are Jeffrey Hansford, Jonathan Nunez and Jose Torres. Lottery also will determine ballot position in that race.

In the 7th Ward, incumbent Brandon Tolliver filed for election. He was appointed to fill a vacancy, so will be running for his first elected term.

Filing to challenge him are Alex Arroyo, Javier Banuelos, and Saul Fultz III. Ballot position will be determined by a lottery between Arroyo and Banuelos.

In the 9th Ward, incumbent Edward Bugg has filed for reelection, and will be challenged by Giovanni Santana.

In the 10th Ward, incumbent Ald. Shweta Baid is the only person who filed.

While the primary would be Feb. 25, the general election is April 1, 2025.
