A car drove through a front window of a Highland Park restaurant owned by musician Billy Corgan, reportedly injuring Corgan’s mother-in-law who was inside.
The Mini Cooper drove through the window at Madame ZuZu’s Tea Shop at around 11:40 a.m. Wednesday. According to police, a patron inside the restaurant in the 1800 block of First Street in downtown Highland Park was hurt and brought to a hospital, along with the driver.
Their conditions were not immediately available.
Corgan’s wife, Chloe Mendel Corgan, posted on social media that her mother was the injured person. Chloe Corgan said her mother, Jenny, and the Corgans’ young son, Augustus, were having lunch when the crash happened.
Augustus was able to leap out of the way and was not hurt, Chloe Corgan said in her post. The post did not say how severe the woman’s injuries were
Adam Dlatt, the owner of the Once Upon A Bagel store next door to Madam ZuZu’s, said he heard that the man driving the Mini Cooper may have suffered a medical emergency in the moments before the crash.
By mid-afternoon, the window had been boarded up and there was a sign taped to the front door saying, “Zuzu’s is Closed.”
The post from Chloe Corgan said Madame ZuZu’s would remain closed until further notice. She also thanked the first responders from Highland Park and Deerfield.
Billy Corgan is the singer and guitarist for the band Smashing Pumpkins, which rose to prominence in the 1990s.
