Kane County is set to light up some of its buildings with green to honor veterans and their service starting Monday.
The buildings will be lit with green until Nov. 11, which is Veterans Day, as a part of Operation Green Light for Veterans. A resolution proclaiming Operation Green Light was passed by the Kane County Board on Oct. 8, and that resolution also encouraged residents to join in by displaying green lights in the windows of their homes and businesses.
“Kane County seeks to honor individuals who have made countless sacrifices for freedom by placing themselves in harm’s way for the good of all,” the proclamation stated.
This year will be the first that Kane County participates in the nationwide effort by the National Association of Counties, Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission Superintendent Jake Zimmerman said in an interview recently.
Over 200 counties participated in Operation Green Light for Veterans last year, according to the National Association of Counties website.
Kane County will be lighting up the Third Street Courthouse and the County Government Center in Geneva, according to Zimmerman.
Green floodlights will be lighting up the County Government Center, while lights in the top of the courthouse’s atrium will be turned green, he said.
Zimmerman said he will be participating and displaying a green light at his house during this time, and he knows many other veterans will, too.
“We’d like to see as many people in the community put those green lights out there and show support for what we see today is 5% of Americans who’ve served in the military,” he said.
