A flag supporting former President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign was removed Monday morning after it was hung outside a west suburban police department.
Posting a campaign sign on public property, such as a police department, is illegal under Illinois law. Melrose Park Police Department representative Andrew Mack said the department did not know who had put the flag there and said it was taken down around 9:30 a.m., after State Rep. Norma Hernandez’s office alerted the department.
Neither Hernandez’s office nor the Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office, which enforces campaign signage laws, immediately returned requests for comment Monday evening.
“The Melrose Park Police Department takes this very seriously,” Mack said. “Had it been any other sign, it also would have been taken down.”
Melrose Park police were also reviewing security footage to try to identify the person who hung the flag, Mack said.
