Lottery establishes ballot position for 2025 city election

A lottery held Wednesday established the ballot position for candidates in the April 1, 2025, city election.

As it stands now, there also will be a February primary for mayor because there are six candidates in that race.

The lottery resulted in Ald. John Laesch, at large, getting the top ballot spot for the mayor’s race. Incumbent Mayor Richard Irvin will get the second spot, followed by Ald. Ted Mesiacos, 3rd Ward; Karina Garcia; Jazmine Garcia; and Judd Lofchie.

In the alderman-at-large race, the lottery determined incumbent Ron Woerman will get the top ballot spot, followed by Keith Larson and Arriana Dallman.

In the 1st Ward race, Hugo Saltijeral won the top ballot spot, followed by incumbent Ald. Dan Barreiro, Jeffrey Donelson and Ray Hull.

In the 2nd Ward, incumbent Juany Garza will be first on the ballot, followed by challenger Alfonso Santoyo.

In the 4th Ward, which has no incumbent, Jonathan Nunez won the top ballot spot, followed by Jeffrey Hansford and Jose Torres.

In the 7th Ward, Javier Banuelos won the first ballot position over Alex Arroyo, who will be second. They will be followed by incumbent Brandon Tolliver and Saul Fultz III.

In the 9th Ward, Giovanni Santana will be in the first position, followed by incumbent Ald. Edward Bugg.

In the 10th Ward, Ald. Shweta Baid is running unopposed.

City Clerk Jennifer Stallings also announced this week that challenges were filed to the nomination petitions for six of the 25 candidates who filed for the municipal election.

Three of those challenges were to mayoral candidates.

Tara Loza filed challenges to the petitions of Laesch and Jazmine Garcia and Karina Garcia.

Salik Khalid filed a challenge to Arriana Dallman, who filed for alderman-at-large; Richard S. Better filed against the petitions of Jose Torres, one of the candidates who filed in the 4th Ward; and Tolliver filed a challenge to the petitions of Fultz III in the 7th Ward.

The electoral board, which is made up of the city clerk, the mayor and the longest-serving alderman, is scheduled to begin hearing challenges at 8 a.m. Friday in the City Council chambers, City Hall, 44 E. Downer Place.
