Matteson police say teacher’s aide arrested after endangering a child at Marya Yates Elementary School

A teacher’s aide was arrested Friday after an 8-year-old student reported being grabbed by a teacher’s aide, slung to the ground and dragged at Marya Yates Elementary School, police said.

Matteson police said Tuesday charges of battery and endangering the life and health of a child had been filed against the teacher’s aide, who was released from custody. But formal charging documents have not been released.

Police said in a news release that just before the end of the school day Friday, the 8-year-old boy was running in the hall when the teacher’s aide grabbed him. The teacher’s aide dragged the student about 20 feet into a classroom and dropped him partially in the doorway, police said.

Police said she used her foot to forcefully nudge the student farther into the classroom so she could close the door.

Police said the student filed a complaint with school officials, prompting an investigation involving school staff, the school resource officer and the Matteson Police Department. Authorities said the investigation included a review of the school’s security footage that corroborated the student’s account.

The student did not report any injuries, police said.

Elementary School District 159 Superintendent Tiffany Brunson did not respond to a message left by the Southtown Tuesday. The school district serves students from parts of Matteson, Tinley Park and Richton Park.
