Police: Portage Township man arrested on child exploitation charge

A Portage Township man is in custody on a felony charge of child exploitation, according to a release from the Porter County Sheriff’s Department.

John Betts, 43, was booked into the Porter County Jail at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to the jail roster. He is charged with two Level 5 felonies, according to online court records, for child exploitation and child solicitation.

Online court records do not yet reflect a time and date for an initial hearing.

The sheriff’s department received a call for service around 1:53 a.m. on Nov. 8 from a parent regarding a complaint about inappropriate text messages to their juvenile daughter at a residence in Portage Township, according to the release.

Police arrested Betts after an investigation, police said.
