Hammond teen dies in likely shootout

An 18-year-old died Sunday morning during a possible shootout with a 17-year-old in Hammond, according to police.

Hammond Police spokesman Lt. Steve Kellogg said in a release that officers were called around 2:15 a.m. November 17 to the 7300 block of Columbia Avenue for the shooting. Upon arrival, they found two victims, he said.

The first victim, a 17-year-old boy, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Chicago hospital for treatment, Kellogg said; the Lake County Coroner’s office identified the second victim as Jakayo Clark, of the 7100 block of Maryland Ave.

The investigation is ongoing, Kellogg said, but it appears that the two were shooting at each other. Detectives are seeking information on the motive and if there were any other people involved, he said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Hammond Police Department at 219-852-2906.
