Two people were taken into custody Wednesday night after the driver of a stolen Jeep blew a red light and caused a traffic accident that injured several people including three children on Michigan Avenue, Chicago police said.
Shortly after 9 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was headed south in the 700 block of North Michigan Avenue in a stolen white Jeep Cherokee when he disregarded a red light. The Jeep then struck a Dodge van and the impact also struck a Jeep Compass and a Honda SUV facing north on Michigan Avenue, police said.
The teenage boy driving the stolen Jeep attempted to flee the scene but was caught and taken into custody by responding officers. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition. A female passenger of the stolen Jeep also attempted to flee the scene but was also caught and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition, police said.
A woman traveling in the Dodge van was taken in fair condition to Northwestern Memorial, and two children, ages four and six who were passengers of the Jeep Compass were taken in fair condition to Lurie Children’s Hospital, police said. Another 6-year-old girl also was taken in fair condition to the same hospital.
Police said the Jeep Cherokee was reported stolen and charges were pending.
