Chicago man faces murder charge in deadly Lincoln Park shooting, police say

A 35-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder in a deadly shooting in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood last week, Chicago police announced Friday.

The suspect, John Conway, of Chicago, was arrested Wednesday at 1:27 a.m. after allegedly shooting and killing Alexander Nesteruk in the 2400 block of North Clark Street on Nov. 27, police said. Conway turned himself in after photos and videos were publicly released earlier this week to help identify him, police said.

Nesteruk, 34, approached people near the sidewalk, leading to an altercation just before 4 p.m., police previously said. A man pulled out a gun and shot Nesteruk in the chest before fleeing in an unknown direction, police said.

Nesteruk, of Wheaton, was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died Monday afternoon, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy on Thursday confirmed that Nesteruk died from a gunshot wound to the chest and was ruled a homicide.

Ald. Timmy Knudsen (43rd) said in a statement that “there is reason to believe this is an isolated incident wherein the victim and offender had a preexisting relationship.”
