Garrett Crochet caught the attention of several teams with his successful move from the bullpen to the rotation in 2024.
The Chicago White Sox are trading the All-Star pitcher to the Boston Red Sox for four prospects, according to multiple reports Wednesday: catcher Kyle Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth and right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez.
Crochet went 6-12 with a 3.58 ERA in 32 starts last season. He had 209 strikeouts in 146 innings. Crochet finished fourth in the American League in strikeouts despite having his innings monitored during the second half of the year. The innings total far exceeded his previous career high of 54⅓ in 2021.
He had been one of the few bright spots during the dismal season in which the Sox set the modern-day record with 121 losses. Overall, Crochet went 9-19 with a 3.29 ERA and 294 strikeouts in 104 appearances (32 starts) during his four seasons.
After three years working out of the bullpen — and missing all of 2022 after undergoing Tommy John surgery — Crochet wanted the chance to compete for a rotation spot in 2024.
He had a great spring training and was named the team’s starter for opening day. He emerged as an ace for the club while setting several career highs — including 13 strikeouts on June 13 against the Seattle Mariners — along the way.
Crochet was named the AL Pitcher of the Month for June. And he earned his first All-Star selection.
There was plenty of speculation leading up to the July 30 trade deadline that Crochet would be dealt, but the team held on to him.
They found a trade partner in the Red Sox. The 25-year-old has two more seasons of club control.
It’s the second time in less than one year the Sox have traded a top-line starter. They dealt Dylan Cease to the San Diego Padres in March for four players, including starter Drew Thorpe and reliever Steven Wilson.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
