Indiana Dunes National Park program to address Mount Baldy’s future

Indiana Dunes National Park Superintendent Jason Taylor is beginning a series of free public programs to engage with the public on park issues.

The first in the “Superintendent’s Spotlight” series focuses on Mount Baldy. It will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, 1215 N. Indiana 49 in Porter.

Monday’s program will discuss the history and status of Mount Baldy, along with current challenges, a range of potential solutions and the park’s intended path forward.

Among the challenges at Mount Baldy is that the dune has been moving south, threatening both the parking lot and the restroom facility.

Mount Baldy’s future will be discussed on Monday, Dec. 16, 2024, at the first of a series of Indiana Dunes National Park programs focused on engaging with the public on issues at the park. (Doug Ross/for Post-Tribune)

Each of the sessions in the series will include experts in the field along with a question-and-answer period. Additional programs in the series will be announced next year.

“I look forward to engaging local community members and others interested in the Indiana Dunes on the park and its operations, to share, to learn, and to answer questions about our stewardship of this special place,” Taylor said in a news release.

Park spokesman Bruce Rowe said this is in keeping with Taylor’s commitment to transparency and keeping the public informed about what’s going on with the national park in Northwest Indiana.

No registration is needed to attend in person, but people who want to attend virtually via Teams will need to register at https://tinyurl.com/induspotlight.
