Elgin couple killed after their car crosses center line, strikes SUV in Wayne

An Elgin man and his wife were killed after the car in which they were driving crossed the center line on Dunham Road in Wayne and collided with an oncoming SUV, according to the Kane County Coroner’s Office and the Wayne Police Department.

Felix Mendoza Urbieta, 45, was driving a 2001 Toyota Corolla southbound on Dunham, south of Stearns Road, about 6:35 p.m. Dec. 8 when he struck a 2017 Toyota Highlander headed northbound, a joint news release from the two departments said.

Mendoza Urbieta was critically injured and later died at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, the report said. His wife, Noemi  Apolinar Huerta, 44, a front-seat passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Toyota Highlander, a 45-year-old woman from Lake in the Hills, and her 12-year-old daughter received minor, non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. They were treated at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin.

An autopsy conducted Dec. 11 found the couple’s preliminary cause of death was “multiple injuries due to motor vehicle accident.” Toxicology samples have been sent to a forensic lab for analysis, the release said.
