Lawsuit seeking back rent from Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard pushed to January

A Cook County eviction case aimed at exacting back rent from Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard for a home she leases in the village was continued to early next year.

At a brief call Tuesday at the Markham courthouse, an attorney for landlord Genetta Hull asked the case be continued until Jan. 7.

Hull filed eviction papers in September, saying Henyard and Kamal Woods owe more than $3,350 in unpaid rent and late fees for the home in the 14600 block of Harvard Street.

In an amended complaint filed Dec. 2, Hull now seeks more than $13,600 in rent, damages and attorney fees.

The new complaint said Henyard and Woods last paid rent in August.

According to the complaint, Henyard moved out of the home sometime in October but Woods still lives there. He directs the youth program at Thornton Township, where Henyard is supervisor.

Federal subpoenas filed by investigators sought records related to Henyard and the township as well as state grant money paid to the youth program.

Hull is represented by Jayman Avery III, with the firm Odelson, Murphey, Frazier & McGrath. It’s the same law firm that is legislative counsel to Dolton village trustees.

Another attorney with the firm asked for the continuance at Tuesday’s call.

A lease agreement shows Henyard living at an address in the 14400 block of Dobson in Dolton and Woods living at an address on Grandview Drive in South Holland.

A special process server was needed to serve papers on Henyard and Woods, and Hull, at a previous court hearing, said locks had been changed at the Harvard Street address to prevent her entry.
