One for the Books: Free books await those who complete Naperville Public Library’s Winter Reading Program

Suit up for a reading extravaganza with Naperville Public Library’s Winter Reading Program, “Yeti to Party!” We’ll be celebrating through Jan. 31 with a New Year’s Eve party theme, featuring our Winter Reading Program mascot, Yeti, along with disco balls, party hats and plenty of sparkles.

Children can get ready to party this winter by setting their own reading goals.

The Winter Reading Program is open to children from birth through 5th grade, even if they don’t have a library card. Winter Reading Program Kits can be picked up from any Naperville Public Library location. They include a paper reading log and the prizes for the first two levels of the programs.

Parents should work with their children to set a realistic reading goal that can be achieved daily, whether they prefer to read a certain number of pages or books each day or for a specified time. Each day the child meets their reading goal, they can color in one of the party-themed images on their reading log. When 12 images have been colored, the child earns a prize for completing one of the reading levels.

Once they complete all three levels, children can boogie over to their nearest library location to choose their final prize — a free book to keep. They also will be entered into a drawing for a dazzling grand prize.

Keep the celebration going with a trip to the library for special storytimes and programs. Children can also join the hunt for Yeti. He’s back by popular demand, hiding in the bookstacks, waiting for them to find him. Activities will change weekly so be sure to stop by all winter long.

Teens can also participate by completing a Winter Reading Program BINGO card. To get started, teens in grades 6-12 can pick up a goodie bag and a BINGO card at the Adult & Teen Services Desk at their preferred library location.

By completing a variety of challenges, like reading books from different genres, enjoying winter activities, attending programs at the library, they’ll score a BINGO. Once they do, they’ll earn a free book to keep.

Those who complete the Winter Reading Program will also be entered into a grand prize drawing.

Children and teens can sign up online at www.naperville-lib.org/wrp or at their nearest Naperville Public Library building starting this week.
