Holiday music concert Saturday at Elgin’s Rakow library

Cabaret-style performers Matt and Cynthia Gruel will present “Under the Mistletoe,” a collection of seasonal holiday favorites, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Rakow Branch of the Gail Borden Public Library, 2751 W. Bowes Road, Elgin.

Numbers will include “Jingle Bells,” “Let It Snow,” “White Christmas,” “Holly Jolly Christmas,” “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” “Run, Run Rudolph,” “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” according to the library’s website. This free show also will feature details about the stories behind the music.

Volunteers make winter clothes for those in need

Dundee, Randall Oaks libraries holding winter clothing drive

The Dundee and Randall Oaks libraries are collecting cold weather clothing to be donated to the Community Crisis Center in Elgin through Monday, Dec. 23.

Clean, unused mittens, hats, scarves, gloves and socks will be accepted, according to the libraries’ website. Donations can be made during regular library operating hours.

Dundee Library is located at 555 Barrington Ave. in East Dundee. Randall Oaks Library is at 500 N. Randall Road in West Dundee.

Owl Prowl planned for Burnidge Forest Preserve in Elgin

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County will hold an “Owl Prowl” from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, in the Burnidge Forest Preserve, 14N035 Coombs Road in Elgin.

Participants will join naturalists on a free sunset hike through the woods to discuss owls, some species of which are particularly active at this time of year as they court, mate and raise their young, according to a social media post for the event.

Dundee Township resident named state volunteer of the year

Lifelong Dundee Township resident Jerry Christopherson has been honored as the Outstanding Citizen Volunteer of the Year by the Illinois Association of Park Districts.

Christopherson’s efforts include twice organizing the effort to bring The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, to Randall Oaks Park in West Dundee, according to a Dundee Township Park District social media post. He’s also been instrumental in organizing veteran recognition events at the park district’s Adult Activities Center in Carpentersville and Randall Oaks Golf Course in West Dundee.

“We are beyond proud to have Jerry as part of our Dundee Township Park District family. His commitment to our community and veterans exemplifies the spirit of service and unity,” the post said.
