Chicago White Sox sign veteran left-hander Martín Pérez to a 1-year deal

Martín Pérez has made at least 20 starts in each of the last four seasons.

The left-hander will bring that durability to the Chicago White Sox after agreeing to a one-year deal on Wednesday. The move, which a source confirmed to the Tribune, is pending a physical.

Pérez, 33, went 5-6 with a 4.53 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 26 starts during 2024 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres. Pérez was 2-5 with a 5.20 ERA in 16 starts for the Pirates and 3-1 with a 3.46 ERA in 10 starts for the Padres.

Pérez is 90-87 with a 4.44 ERA and 1,109 strikeouts in 314 career outings (269 starts) during 13 big-league seasons with the Texas Rangers (2012-18, 2022-23), Minnesota Twins (2019), Boston Red Sox (2020-21), Pirates (2024) and Padres (2024).

He earned All-Star honors in 2022 while going 12-8 with a 2.89 ERA in 32 starts with the Rangers.

Robert Murray of FanSided first reported Wednesday’s signing. Financial terms of the deal are unknown

Pérez adds a veteran presence to a pitching staff that includes three starters who made their major-league debuts in 2024 in Jonathan Cannon, Drew Thorpe and Sean Burke, along with Davis Martin — who went 0-5 in 11 outings (10 starts) after returning from Tommy John surgery.

The Sox also came to terms on a one-year deal with right-hander Bryse Wilson, who has experience as a starter and in the bullpen, on Dec. 18.

Sox finalize 1-year, $3.5 million deal with infielder Josh Rojas

The Sox finalized a one-year, $3.5 million deal with infielder Josh Rojas on Wednesday. To make room for Rojas on the 40-man roster, the Sox designated infielder Jake Amaya for assignment.

Reports of Rojas joining the Sox first surfaced on Jan. 2.

Additionally, outfielder Corey Julks — designated for assignment by the Sox on Dec. 21 — cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte. He will be a non-roster invitee to Sox camp. And the Kansas City Royals claimed infielder Braden Shewmake, who the Sox designated for assignment on Jan. 1, off waivers.

Charlotte announced former Sox pitcher Sergio Santos as their manager on Wednesday. He led Double-A Birmingham to the Southern League championship in 2024.
