Knife-wielding man fatally shot by police in North Riverside, police say

A man wielding two knives was fatally shot by police on Sunday afternoon in North Riverside, according to police.

North Riverside police responded to a disturbance at approximately 3:47 p.m. in the 8500 block of Cermak Road, where they encountered a man from Crest Hill wielding knives.

During the incident, an officer shot the knife-wielding man “in defense of another individual,” hitting the man. He was immediately provided medical aid and rushed to the hospital, police say. He later passed away due to his injury.

Officials say that there is no other threat to public safety in the area and that officers are fully cooperating with the State Police Public Integrity Task Force, which is investigating the incident.
