A new business is planned to open in March in downtown La Grange just in time to cool people off in advance of summer.
The newcomer to La Grange, La Michoacana Azteca, is a Mexican-style ice cream shop at which all products will be fresh and made with real fruit, officials from the business said. While the ice cream and several flavors of frozen yogurt will be a focus, the store also will sell sandwiches and juices, said manager Joshua Gutierrez.
Jose Ayala, the owner of La Michoacana Azteca, said Monday he is looking forward to opening his store in downtown La Grange. He said he has additional locations in the Chicago area and in California.
“I am excited about coming to La Grange because it’s a nice town, and there’s nothing else like it there,” Ayala said.
La Michoacana Azteca received a building permit Jan. 2, which is good through July 2, and has signs in its window at 15 S. La Grange Road, promoting that it is coming soon.
Kristina Joseph, the administrator for The La Grange Social & Around Town Facebook page, which has 10,500 members, believes La Michoacana Azteca will be a welcome addition to La Grange.
“I’m thrilled to welcome La Michoacana to our community,” she said. “Their arrival marks a positive step towards growth and opportunity in La Grange.”
Countryside previously was home to La Michoacana, which was a Mexican-style ice cream shop, but Gutierrez said that is different from La Michoacana Azteca.
“It has different owners and is different,” he said.
Berenice Kahoun, of neighboring Countryside, said she is excited about La Michoacana Azteca opening soon in La Grange.
We love La Michoacana,” she said. “We truly are fans of the concept and we will be making sure to visit their business regularly. The pedestrian count is definitely going to help at the new location.”
