A Niles North High School security guard was stabbed Tuesday evening after a basketball game between the school’s Vikings team and the Evanston Township High School Wildkits, according to Skokie police.
Police said in a statement they responded to a report of a large disturbance involving multiple people around 9:24 p.m. Calling it an aggravated battery case, the statement said police “determined that during the disturbance, an unknown suspect struck an adult male victim in the upper body with a sharp object.”
The guard was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Deputy Police Chief Denise Franklin said Wednesday he is in good condition.
Niles North is part of Niles Township High School District 219, which released a statement saying students in the district were not injured or arrested in the incident.
“Niles Township District 219 is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation, which is a police matter,” the statement said.
Evanston Township High School District 202’s Director of Communication Reine Hanna shared a statement that was sent to families.
“We can confirm that no ETHS students were injured or arrested as part of the incident,” the statement said.
“We have been in close communication with our partners at Niles Township District 219 and extend our concern and support to the District 219 safety staff member who sustained injuries in the incident.”
Police say the incident remains under investigation. Franklin said the department conducted a canvass and interviewed individuals at Niles North. The department did not reach out to neighboring agencies for assistance, she said.
The Wildkits and Vikings went into overtime 60-60 on Tuesday evening and the Wildkits won 68-64.
