Police respond to Merrillville Burlington on report of gun fired; one person injured

One person was injured during an incident at a Merrillville shopping center Friday evening.

Hobart Police responded around 5 p.m. January 17 to a call billed initially as a shooting at Burlington Coat Factory, 2020 E. Lincoln Highway, Hobart Assistant Police Chief Nick Wardrip said in an email. They found an injured person on-scene, but the person hadn’t been shot, he said.

The person was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

Police did confirm that a gun was fired in the business, but the suspect fled before police arrived.

This is an ongoing investigation, he said, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
