Aurora’s Cathedral of Grace St. John AME Church honored the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on Sunday by recognizing five young men who personify his character and values, according to a press release about the awards.
During the church’s 24th annual King Celebration, five young Black men were presented with the MLK Character Award in recognition of their commitment to service at school and in the community, the release stated.
The 2025 MLK Character Award recipients are Seanmichael Opoku-Agyemang of Bolingbrook High School, Melekh Mosiah of East Aurora High School, Bryan Mann of Waubonsie Valley High School, Caleb Hoskins of Metea Valley High School and Isaiah Strange of Neuqua Valley High School.
Scholarship application deadline nears
The deadline is 4 p.m. Friday to apply for the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley 2025-26 Scholarship Program, foundation officials said.
The Community Foundation’s online application is open through this Friday only, offering 500 awards totaling over $3 million to be given out over the next four years, officials said.
Scholarships are available exclusively to Fox Valley high school seniors, college undergrads, trade school and graduate students for the 2025-26 academic year, according to a press release about the program.

The Community Foundation Scholarship Program consists of hundreds of separate funds conceived and funded by local donors, including individuals, families, local businesses, clubs and associations to support Fox Valley residents as they continue their education after high school.
Scholarships are available to students who live in the Aurora area, Kendall County and southern Kane County.
Since its founding in 1948, the Community Foundation has awarded over $27.3 million in scholarships to area residents, officials said.

Ride in Kane fares to increase starting Feb. 1
The fares for trips of more than 10 miles for those using the Ride in Kane program will increase by 50 cents per mile effective Saturday, Feb. 1.
The total cost will be $2 per mile with the rate increase, according to a news release from the Kane County Division of Transportation. The hike is necessary in order to continue delivering the ride services, which have been provided to county residents 65 and older and persons with disabilities since 2008, the release said.
