League of Women Voters to hold Aurora mayoral candidate forum

On Feb. 6, the League of Women Voters will be holding a forum to let Aurora mayoral candidates discuss their platforms and answer questions ahead of the Feb. 25 primary election.

The forum will be held at the Aurora Police Department, 1200 E. Indian Trail Road, from 7 to 9 p.m. It will also be live-streamed on the League of Women Voters Aurora Area Facebook page for those who are unable to attend in person.

The candidates confirmed to be attending the forum include Karina Garcia, Ald. John Laesch, Jazmine Garcia, Ald. Ted Mesiacos and Judd Lofchie, according to the organization’s website.

All candidates running for mayor of Aurora were invited to the forum, but incumbent Mayor Richard Irvin declined to participate due to a scheduling conflict, League of Women Voters Aurora Area Chapter President Tania Traverso told The Beacon-News.

Irvin confirmed in a news release on his Facebook page that he “already had a longstanding obligation on that day” and that he asked the date be moved so he could participate, but he said the League of Women Voters was unable to change it.

The Aurora Area League of Women Voters welcomes Irvin to come to the forum, but even if he does not attend, it will still take place, Traverso said. The forum will only be canceled if less than two candidates show up, she said.

Early voting began Jan. 16 for the primary election on Feb. 25, which includes the Aurora mayoral primary. The top two finishers in the primary will move on to the April 1 consolidated election.
