Students at Metea Valley High School in Aurora to present ‘Winter Scenes’

The Metea Valley High School theater production “Winter Scenes,” a series of student-directed one-act shows, will be presented in February.

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 13-15 and 2 p.m. Feb. 15 at the school’s Black Box Theater, 1801 N. Eola Road, Aurora.

General admission is $10, and student and senior tickets cost $5. Seats are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and the audience is asked to arrive at least 15 minutes before showtimes at Door 5.

This year’s selections include “The Boy and His Poems,” written and directed by Aditi Puntambekar and Alli Jacobson; “Slam Sensation,” written and directed by Nevaeh Maxey and Ciniyah Young; and “The New Margo,” written by Stephen Gregg and directed by Loren Jones.

Lincoln focus of program in St. Charles

Kevin Wood will portray Abraham Lincoln during a program titled “Lincoln on Slavery, Emancipation and Equality” from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in the Huntley Community Room at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave. in St. Charles.

Lincoln, as portrayed by Wood, will give a summary of the long history of slavery in North America, focusing especially on the great debates and compromises over slavery at the time of the formation of the United States and during the subsequent 80 years, event organizers said.

Wood will share Lincoln’s political views on slavery and emancipation and how those shifted over the years.

One Book, One Community program to begin in Geneva

Geneva Public Library will kick off its fourth annual One Book, One Community program from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb, 8, in the lobby of the library at 227 S. Seventh St. in Geneva.

The program, which runs through Sunday, April 13, is designed to spark conversation and connection throughout Geneva, organizers said.

The 2025 book selection is “No Two Persons,” by Erica Bauermeister, a New York Times bestselling author. The book explores how stories can affect people in unexpected of ways, and how we are all more closely connected to one another than we might think, library officials said.

A number of events are planned during the program, including the Grand Finale Celebration at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at the library, where Bauermeister will take part in a discussion of “No Two Persons,” followed by a book signing and photo opportunity.

Countywide New Year’s Eve anti-DUI effort nets six arrests

A New Year’s Eve no-refusal operation involving the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office and 13 law enforcement agencies resulted in the arrest of six allegedly intoxicated drivers.

Agencies participating included Aurora, Batavia, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Elburn, Elgin, Geneva, Montgomery, Pingree Grove, St. Charles and West Dundee as well as Illinois State Police Troop 3 and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, according to a news release.

The operation took place from 11 p.m. Dec. 31 to 3 a.m. Jan. 1. Drivers suspected to be intoxicated were arrested, taken to their local police station and asked to submit to a Breathalyzer or other chemical testing, the release said. If they refused, an assistant state’s attorney would obtain a court order making them comply.
