Cops find gun on teen robbery suspect at Cal New Tech

Hobart Police found a modified semi-automatic handgun on a teen robbery suspect when they patted him down at Calumet New Tech High School last week, charges state.

Cesar Aguirre, 18, of Calumet Township, is charged with armed robbery, possession of a machine gun and possession of a firearm on school property.

He posted a $7,000 cash bond Monday. His next court date is Feb. 14 before Magistrate Kathleen Sullivan.

The victim lied to cops, saying it was a random robbery. He later admitted Aguirre robbed him at a Jan. 7 meetup at the Hobart Strack and Van Til to sell him marijuana.

Police narrowed Aguirre as a suspect after a teacher overheard other students say he had robbed the victim. The victim later told cops several students were saying Aguirre bragged about the stickup.

Hobart Police responded just before 7 p.m. that day to the grocery store, 999 W. Old Ridge Road.

“I’m not gonna lie, give me everything,” the victim said Aguirre, who got in the victim’s passenger seat, told him. He stole about $50-$60, his wallet and phone.

The robbery happened in a blind spot in the parking lot, out of camera view.

On Jan. 29, cops met with Aguirre in the school office. When they patted him down, they found a gun magazine, Glock 19 handgun in his coat, and a vape pen.

During a search warrant that day at Aguirre’s home, investigators found a safe with another magazine, vape pen and gummies.
