East Dundee Black & White Art Show winners announced

The winners of East Dundee Arts Council’s second annual Black & White Art Show have been announced.

A panel of art professionals judged the works, done in shades of black, white and gray, that were on display Saturday night at eight venues in the village’s downtown. Fan favorites were also selected. Gift certificates for art supplies and cash prizes were awarded.

The winners in the fine arts category were:

  • First place — Karl Jahnke, for “Three Chicks”;
  • Second place — Tonna Holtz, for “Feathered Hope”;
  • Third place — Angela Talmo, for “Tardis Time Traveler”;
  • Popular vote — Tonna Holtz, for “Feathered Hope”.

The winners in the photography category were:

  • First place — Amanda Pawelo, for “Soul Peering Fox”;
  • Second place — Jason Nowitzki, for “Majestic Gull”;
  • Third place — Russ Budzicz, for “Candyland”;
  • Popular vote — Olivia Eckersberg, for “Granite Veil”.

Elgin Area Chamber honors local businesses, volunteers

The Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce honored outstanding member businesses and volunteers during its annual meeting Thursday, Feb. 13, in the Grand Ballroom of the Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin.

Also recognized were the chamber’s retiring board members and chamber achievements of the past year, according to a news release. The coming year’s programs and events were discussed.

Award winners were:

  • Large Business Award — Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick;
  • Small Business Award — Catering Made Simple;
  • Ambassador Award — Donna Besler, Prairie Community Bank;
  • Leadership Award — Jeni Lyon, HLR;
  • Volunteer Award — Jason Kanak, Braden Business Systems;
  • Community Partner — City of Elgin Community Development Department.

St. Charles Public Library to hold seed swap Saturday

The St. Charles Public Library’s annual Seed Swap and Seed Library Kickoff will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 15, in the library’s Huntley Community Room, 1 S. Sixth Ave.

Community members can “check out” more than 150 heirloom seed varieties free of charge, event organizers said. Master gardeners from the University of Illinois Extension Office will be on hand to answer gardening-related questions.

All of the seeds available are heirloom or open-pollinated, meaning that once saved and planted again, they will grow into the same type of plant, officials said.

ECC wins $90,000 grant to promote manufacturing careers

Elgin Community College has been awarded a $90,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce’s Make It in Illinois campaign to promote manufacturing careers across the state.

The money will be used to recruit trainees and workers through local faith-based and community organizations and local economic development councils, according to a news release. It will help promote apprenticeships and internships and assist Elgin-area manufacturers in identifying open positions and what skills are needed to fill them.

Kane County launches Behavioral Health 360 initiative

The Kane County Health Department has launched Behavioral Health 360, an online platform to help people facing mental health and substance abuse issues.

A self-help tool, the site provides information, strategies and local resources to assist people in taking control of their well-being, according to a news release. It’s free to use, confidential and designed for both teens and adults.

Mental health providers also can use Behavioral Health 360 to share reliable information and resources with their clients, helping to supplement in-person care, the release said.
