Merrillville Police are investigating a murder-suicide at a gas station Saturday after responding to a report of shots fired, according to a release.
Officials have not released the names of the victims, pending family notification.
At approximately 9:43 a.m. Feb. 15, police responded to a call of shots fired at the Luke gas station, 721 E. Lincoln Highway. Police discovered two people inside the station who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
“Through further investigation, Merrillville Police Detectives have determined that this heart-breaking incident was a murder-suicide, stemming from a domestic matter,” police said. “It was confirmed that the victim and the suspect were known parties to each other, confirming that this was an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to public safety.”
The investigation is ongoing and police ask that anyone with further information contact Detective Van Rite at avanrite@merrillville.in.gov.
“The Merrillville Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this senseless loss. Our thoughts are with them during this incredibly difficult time,” police said.
