Subzero wind chills persist in the Chicago area, with temperatures in the single digits

Frigid wind chills are expected to continue in Chicago and surrounding areas Thursday as commuters continue the battle against subzero wind chills, weather officials said.

While temperatures are expected in the low 20s, wind chills are expected to hover as low as negative 9 degrees. The sun was expected to be out during a frigid Thursday when winds are expected to blow between 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph, officials said.

Thursday night, a high of 10 degrees is expected with a wind chill as low as negative 1.

Anyone outside for periods of time should guard against frostbite with winter accessories including gloves or mittens, hats, earmuffs and scarves. Thermal underwear and or layers of clothing should be considered for warmth.

Current temperatures registered at O’Hare International Airport are mostly cloudy at 5 degrees with a wind chill of negative 15. At Midway Airport, conditions are the same.

Acts of kindness to the homeless for those without protective items should be considered during these brutally cold conditions.
