A Neuqua Valley teacher is one of just 30 high school educators to be named a finalist for a 2025 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching in Illinois.
Gillian Schneider teaches English, creative writing and an interdisciplinary American Society Block to sophomores, juniors and seniors at the Naperville high school, according to information provided by the nonprofit Golden Apple Foundation, which helps prepare, recognize and mentor teachers.
“With 24 years of experience, (Schneider) has made a lasting impact on her students, including her latest work contributing to developing a district-wide, dual-credit English curriculum that equips them for college-level coursework,” the foundation said in comments sent to the media.
“She integrates literature and history in her American Society Block course, encouraging students to explore connections between American literature and historical events. … Her approach emphasizes writing as both a skill and a tool for self-expression, guiding students to refine their rhetorical abilities through continuous reflection and discussion.”
The finalists were culled from more than 470 nominations, according to a foundation news release.
Award winners will be notified in surprise announcements at their schools this spring. Each will receive a sabbatical provided by Northwestern University and $5,000 in cash, the release said.
Award recipients also become Fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, a community of educators who help prepare the next generation of teachers in Golden Apple Scholars and Accelerators programs, which are initiatives dedicated to addressing the teacher shortage in Illinois.
“Great teachers change lives. These finalists exemplify the dedication and passion that define exceptional teaching,” Alan Mather, president of Golden Apple, said in the release.
“Their commitment to fostering student growth and inspiring a love for learning enriches not only their classrooms but also the entire educational community. We are honored to recognize their invaluable contributions.”
