A Glenwood bar says it will take steps to bolster security after a 31-year-old Tinley Park man was shot and killed outside the establishment early Sunday.
The shooting took place at Chug-A-Lug Pub & Grill, 18409 S. Halsted St., where Glenwood police were called at about 1:30 a.m. and found a man who had been shot.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as James Honey, of the 6800 block of Hickory Street. He was pronounced dead at 1:38 a.m. Sunday at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, and an autopsy was scheduled to be performed Monday.
Police said there was a confrontation between Honey and another group in Chug-A-Lug’s parking lot as Honey and his companions were leaving the bar.
Nobody is in custody, and Glenwood police said they’re being assisted in the investigation by the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force.
In a statement Sunday, Chug-A-Lug said it has security measures in place, including security personnel and has a “strategic closing procedure to ensure a safe dispersal of our customers.”
“We have always prioritized the safety and well-being of our patrons and staff,” the business said, adding the shooting was “the first incident of this nature to occur at our establishment.”
The three-level bar opened in 2022.
“We understand that this incident has caused concern within our community, and we want to reassure everyone that we are taking all necessary steps to further enhance our security measures,” the business said.
“We are fully cooperating with the Glenwood Police Department in their ongoing investigation. We are committed to providing them with any and all information they may require,” the statement reads.
Chug A Lug said it is committed to conversation and contributing to efforts address and help stop violence in the community.
Glenwood Mayor Ron Gardiner, in a statement Sunday, said that “this tragedy is unacceptable and has no place in our community or any other.”
“I have spoken with the business owners and know this was an isolated incident outside of their restaurant, but that they are committed to building upon their security protocols and ensuring the continued safety of all who visit their business,” the mayor said.
Gardiner is president of the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association and said he will organize a south suburban summit on gun violence to explore ways to work together to prevent other families from experiencing a tragic loss.
“It is my hope that those involved in this incident will come forward and accept responsibility for their actions, and that those with any information will contact the Glenwood Police Department,” Gardiner said.
