BWI loses power in main terminal related to fire, causing delays and diversions

Power is being restored in some areas of BWI Marshall Airport after a fire near the airport on Monday morning caused outages in the main terminal, delaying some flights.

The airport said on social media that screening operations had resumed around 9:50 a.m. as power was slowly restored at the airport.

A Maryland Aviation Administration spokesperson said Monday morning that the airport’s main terminal and hourly garage had lost power in some areas, causing flight delays and diversions.

The outage was related to a fire and wires down in the area of West Baltimore & Annapolis Road and Park 100 Drive just south of the airport, according to a Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. spokesperson. Anne Arundel County Police on social media encouraged people to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Passengers should check with their airlines for updated flight status information, MAA spokesperson Jonathan Dean said.

A total of 122 flights in and out of BWI had been delayed as of 10 a.m. Monday, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.
