Police: Chesterton man was on bicycle when fatally struck by train

A Chesterton man riding his bicycle died when he was struck by a train at the South Calumet Road crossing in downtown Chesterton Friday evening.

The man was identified as Frank Remm, 70, said Assistant Chesterton Police Chief Cisco Rodriguez.

Police are treating the death as accidental, Rodriguez said.

A ruling from the Porter County Coroner’s office is pending toxicology results, Rodriguez said.

The investigation found that a few cars from a westbound train had passed and the crossing gates had gone up.

The crossing gates went down again for an eastbound train, Rodriguez said.

Video from the Norfolk Southern engine will help determine the sequence of events of when the bicyclist attempted to cross the tracks and if the gates were down or up, Rodriguez said.

Remm lived a short ride north from the South Calumet Road crossing.

“We’re getting too many of these. These are not the kind of calls officers want to get used to,” Rodriguez said.

Chesterton police recently handled the death of a 15-year-old girl who was struck at the  North 8th Street crossing during the early morning hours of Jan. 12.

On May 9, 2023, Sylis Wilfinger, 14, a Chesterton Middle School student, was killed at the  North 15th Street crossing. Sylis was on a bicycle and wearing headphones when struck by a Norfolk Southern train.

Chesterton averages 83 trains per day on its tracks through the town.
