We made it through another week, Chicago. In Washington, President Donald Trump gave the longest address ever given to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday. And the next day, our mayor, Brandon Johnson, testified before the House Oversight Committee with fellow leaders of sanctuary cities.
Trump’s administration implemented a 30-day tariff exemption to U.S. automakers in Mexico and Canada. After last week’s tense exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the White House paused all military aid to Ukraine. The Supreme Court rejected Trump’s freeze in nearly $2 billion of foreign aid. Elsewhere in the world, the ceasefire in Gaza is over, with both Hamas and Israel unsure of the way forward.
Bringing it back to Illinois, the results of our new state flag contest are in, and the existing flag has won, earning more than 165,000 votes. Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel criticized his fellow Democrats in Chicago this week and said that he won’t rule out another run for mayor.
The biggest night for movies was on Sunday. The independent film “Anora” won the Oscar for best picture, and its leading lady, Mikey Madison, took home the golden statue for best actress. The Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago is reopening, and playwright David Mamet is bringing his new work “Henry Johnson” there in April. Last, but not least, the Cubs are getting some new and improved spring training digs in Mesa, Arizona.
