Man faces 5-year split term for 2023 assault

A Lafayette man faces a five-year split term for his role in a 2023 assault at the Park West Apartments in Griffith.

Marcel Phillips, 34, pleaded guilty Thursday to domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony.

The agreement calls for two years in jail or prison and three years probation. A judge would have to accept the deal.

His sentencing hearing is April 3.

Court documents allege Phillips climbed through a window on April 28, 2023, and strangled a woman from behind until she passed out.

When she woke up, she was lying in the bathtub and Phillips was still yelling at her.

Highland man gets probation for assaulting classmate during active shooter drill

A Highland man got 18 months probation for inappropriately touching a high school classmate during an active shooter drill in 2021.

Keith A. Miller pleaded guilty Feb. 28 to battery resulting in moderate bodily injury. He was sentenced that day.

The incident happened on Nov. 12, 2021, at Morton High School in Hammond.

The girl felt she had to stay quiet because of the drill, a probable cause affidavit states. Miller, then 17, stuck his hands down her pants, then grabbed her and stuck her hands down his pants. When it was clear she wasn’t consenting, he again stuck his hands down her pants, charges allege.

He stopped when the lights were turned back on, charges state. The girl went to her desk and cried.
