Glenwood Academy students outscore first responders
Representatives of Glenwood’s police and fire departments livened up Glenwood Academy when they challenged students to participate in a three-point shootout and free throw competition at the school in Glenwood, and it was no contest: The students won both competitions.
The Glenwood Academy band played the Star-Spangled Banner, and the more than 15 first responders participating received artwork made by students, thanking them for their service. Both departments also received a basketball signed by staff, families and students.
Students scored 12 points to the responders’ eight points in the free throw contest, trying to shoot as many as possible in one minute. They also won the three-point contest, in which each side picked two players who had one minute to make as many three-point shots as possible; Glenwood students had 12 baskets to the responders’ 10.
“This was a great community relations building event for all involved,” Fire Chief Derek Peddycord said in a news release of this first event pitting students against first responders, adding that he looks forward to doing it again.
Mary Hollie, academy president and chief executive officer, also enjoyed the event. “This was such a great way to bring our students, families and staff together for a fun afternoon and to show our appreciation for our local first responders,” she said in the release. “We so appreciate all the hard work our first responders do every single day to keep our community and surrounding areas safe.”

Will County Children’s Advocacy Center gains donation
Members of 100+ Women Who Care serving Will County gave $8,500 to the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center on March 12.
Will County State’s Attorney james Glasgow established the center in 1995 “to improve the integrity of investigations into allegations of child sexual abuse, while providing hope, healing and justice for the children and their families,” per a news release. “Every day the Will County CAC advocates, forensic interviewers and trauma therapists help children who have lived through terrible abuse, reclaim their childhood,” Glasgow explained in the release.
Each quarter, members of 100+ Women Who Care can nominate local charities. Three are chosen at random, and after a five-minute presentation, members vote on which organization to support. When the winning charity is named, everyone writes a $100 check to it at the meeting.
New members are welcome. The Will County chapter’s next meeting is 6 to 7 p.m. April 8 at Coom’s Corner Sports Grill, 1255 E. Ninth St., Lockport. For information, visit www.100wwc-will.org.
