1 dead, 5 injured in overnight traffic crash in Garfield Ridge

A 28-year-old man was killed and five other people were injured in an overnight traffic accident in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood, Chicago police said.

About 3:25 a.m., a Ford Fusion was headed east in the 5600 block of West 55th Street when the driver made a U-turn striking a Hyundai Palisade headed west, police said.

The driver of the Ford, 28, was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His passenger, a 31-year-old woman, was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The driver of the Palisade, a 29-year-old man, was taken to the same hospital where he was listed in fair condition, police said.

Three passengers of the Palisade also were injured. A 20-year-old woman was taken to UChicago Medicine. A 32-year-old woman was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and listed in fair condition and a 17-year-old girl was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in fair condition, police said.

The Major Accident Investigation Unit was investigating.
