Charges unsealed against alleged gunman charged in fatal Gary shootout

Authorities allege Paris “P Youngin’” Lewis fired the first shots at Marcus Williams.

Williams had gone to his younger relative’s home in Gary around 5:30 p.m. April 18.

The boy had been having problems after fighting Lewis months earlier. There were threats ever since, the boy alleged.

As Williams and the boy talked, three males showed — Lewis, plus two teen brothers.

Within moments, Lewis flashed an AR-style rifle and shot Williams. On the ground, Williams took out his own handgun and returned fire. Lewis was hit and fell.

“Kill him,” Lewis said.

Then, authorities allege the older teen brother — a 16-year-old with an ankle monitor — picked up the Lewis’ rifle and shot Williams multiple times.

Lewis, 18, is charged with murder and a gun enhancement. He faces up to 85 years, if convicted.

After the shooting, he was hospitalized at the University of Chicago for his wounds.

Now, he is being held at the Lake County Jail without bond. His next court date is May 15.

Williams, 34, of Gary, died of several gunshots to the head and torso, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. He was found lying next to a Buick Enclave parked in front of a home on the 3500 block of Massachusetts Street.

The 16-year-old’s younger brother — identified in court documents as S.C. — is a juvenile.

Another Gary Police officer later said S.C. tried dragging a wounded Lewis from the scene. They later found Williams’ gun in S.C.’s pockets.

Lewis later told officers he was unarmed and Williams threatened and shot him unprovoked — an account police believed was a lie.

He said he was going to a friend’s house on the 3400 block of Kentucky Street.
