Whiting graduate and School City of Hammond educator Dave Verta was the unanimous choice to lead the small district as its next superintendent.
The Whiting School Board appointed Verta Wednesday.
Verta, who’s been a football coach and headed the human resources department in Hammond, said he’s excited to come back home.
“This is surreal, it’s a dream come true… This place taught me how to be resilient, taught me grit and hard work. The town of Whiting is a special place in my heart.”
Verta said his mother, brothers, and his wife all graduated from Whiting.
“I’m just so thrilled to be back and work with everyone in the community to support each other and achieve great things,” Verta told the board after his appointment.
Before the vote, former Hammond school chief Scott Miller offered a strong endorsement.
“I worked with Dave the past five years and you couldn’t be selecting a more qualified and more caring person,” said Miller.
“He just loves students and that guides his decision making.”
Verta, a 1999 Whiting graduate, signed a three-year contract at $143,000 annually. He began work immediately.
He spent his education career in Hammond serving as a teacher, administrator, and coach at Hammond Clark High. When it closed in 2021, he became the first principal at newly opened Hammond Central High School.
Later, he shifted into the central office role as human resources director.
Former Whiting superintendent Cynthia Scroggins left the district in January after 23 years, including nearly nine as its superintendent. Assistant Superintendent Lorri Covaciu also resigned.
The school board approved their settlement agreements in December.
Former Tri-Creek superintendent Debra Howe has served as interim superintendent since January.
