A train and vehicle collided at a rail crossing in Crete Thursday morning after a driver ignored the crossing gate, police said.
Crete police Chief Scott Pieritz said officers responded at 6:53 a.m. to the crash at the railroad crossing in the 500 block of West Exchange Street.
The driver was heading east on Exchange Street when the gates began to lower, Pieritz said. The vehicle struck the gates and collided with a passing train, he said.
No injuries were reported, Pieritz said.
The driver was issued a citation for disobeying the crossing gates, Pieritz said.
“Luckily, it appears the vehicle was pushed backward away from the train, preventing further damage or injury,” Pieritz said.
The train was stopped while police and railroad officials conducted an investigation, Pieritz said. Exchange Street west of Main Street was temporarily closed during the response, the Police Department reported on Facebook.
