A man wanted in connection to the fatal stabbing last week of 10-year-old girl and her 21-year-old sister has been taken into custody, Streamwood police announced Monday.
The man, 25-year-old Jalonie Jenkins, was taken into custody “without incident” late Sunday night in Downers Grove, police said. A relative previously identified him as the stepbrother of the victims, Janiya Jenkins, 21, and Eyani Jones, 10.
The department had been searching for Jenkins since the victims were discovered Wednesday evening and said that their officers, along with the Major Case Assistance Team had been “working around the clock” to find Jenkins.
“He is being held in reference to the ongoing investigation of the fatal stabbings of Janiya Jenkins, 21 years -old, and Eyani Jones, 10 years-old,” Streamwood police said in a statement. “The Streamwood Police Department is no longer seeking public assistance at this time.”
Few details have been released about the fatal stabbings, but an investigation is underway. The department also said Monday that more information will be forthcoming.
“Our deepest sympathies are with the families of these young victims,” Police Chief Shawn Taylor said in a statement. “We are working hard to bring a swift resolution to this case so the families can grieve.”
In Streamwood, residents had described the neighborhood as a generally calm and tranquil place. Neighbors knew something was amiss after police were dispatched to the home on the 1600 block of McKool Avenue around 7:50 p.m. May 28.
When residents learned of what had happened, the news shook the community.
“This affected the whole community. This should have never happened to that family,” Denise Howard, a Streamwood resident who knew the little girl, previously told the Tribune.
She hugged her neighbor Thursday morning after learning of the stabbings.
