A Tinley Park man has been charged with reckless homicide in connection with a fatal collision May 31 that killed a 23-year-old Romeoville man in Orland Park, police said Friday.
Robert Barajar, 41, is also charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failing to report a death or injury, Orland Park police said. He was scheduled to make an initial appearance at the Bridgeview courthouse Friday.
Police said they responded shortly after 3 a.m. May 31 to 159th Street and Harlem Avenue for a two-car crash.
An investigation determined that Barajar’s vehicle was being driven south on Harlem and struck a vehicle driven by Bartholomew Kubera, who was taken to Silver Cross Hospital.
The Will County coroner’s office said Bartholomew Kubera died just after 4 a.m. May 31 at Silver Cross.
Police said after hitting Kubera’s vehicle, Barajar ran off without rendering aid or notifying police.
Following an investigation that included reviewing surveillance footage and gathering physical evidence from the scene, Barajar, was identified as the driver, police said in a news release. Barajar was taken into custody without incident, police said.
Barajar is also charged with disobeying a traffic signal and driving over the posted speed limit, police said.
Kubera was a stationary engineer at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove and was a full-time student at Triton College in River Grove, according to his obituary.
