A plan before the Cook County Board would change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. But Commissioner Stanley Moore, who said he’s a descendant of Freedmen, wants to put a pause on the proposal until all Five Civilized Tribes — the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek) and Seminole nations — recognize Black people once enslaved by tribal citizens, with citizenship and rights.
