Ants are common in the garden, but are they harmful to plants? The general answer is no. In peonies, for instance, ants get nectar from peony buds and provide pest control in return. Their benefits extend to pollination, breaking down organic matter, eating insect eggs, and tunneling through soil, delivering oxygen to plant roots and improving drainage.
