An Aurora man accused of beating and shooting a 30-year-old woman during a Naperville robbery has been charged with attempted murder, Naperville police said.
The victim was found on a porch in the 1000 block of Iroquois Avenue about 2:45 p.m. June 23 after being ejected from a car in which she was driving with Jarvell Rainey, 21, of the 800 block of Oliver Avenue, and an unnamed accomplice, a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Naperville Police Department said.
The pair allegedly picked up the woman at the Motel 6 at 1585 Naperville-Wheaton Road and while in the car, Rainey allegedly punched her in the right eye and shot her in the right side of her chest while taking her wallet, cell phone, backpack and an unspecified amount of cash, the release said.
The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Rainey and the woman knew each other, but police Cmdr. Rick Krakow said he could not speak to the exact nature of their relationship.
After police identified Rainey as a suspect, an arrest warrant was obtained on June 28 and Rainey taken into custody Monday as he left the Comfort Inn and Suites at 308 S. Lincolnway St. in North Aurora, the release said.
Rainey was denied pre-trial release and is being held at the DuPage County jail on charges of attempted ffirst-degree murder, armed robbery with a firearm and aggravated battery-discharge of a firearm, all class X felonies.
“It is alleged that Mr. Rainey not only robbed an innocent, unarmed woman, but also shot her in the chest before forcing her out of the vehicle and fleeing the scene,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “This type of senseless violence and complete disregard for human life will not be tolerated in DuPage County. Thankfully, the victim in this case did not sustain life-threatening injuries.”
Police Chief Jason Arres agreed, saying in a statement that, “Acts of violence that put our residents in danger cannot and will not be tolerated in our city.”
Rainey’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 5.
