An Aurora man has been found guilty of killing his girlfriend, who was the mother of his 3-year-old child, in December 2020, officials announced Friday.
Getzuri Arellano, 24, faces a sentence of between 20 and 60 years in prison after being found guilty of first-degree murder during a bench trial in front of Kane County Judge David Kliment, according to a press release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Arellano will be back in Kane County court on May 17 for any post-trial motions and sentencing, officials said.
In the early morning of Dec. 9, 2020, Arellano secretly went through the phone of his girlfriend, Natalie Jimenez, 20, and what he found upset him, the release said.
He then confronted Jimenez in the small bathroom of the couple’s house on Indian Avenue in Aurora, where they argued until Arellano grabbed her and strangled her to death, according to the release.
Officials said that Aurora police officers and Aurora Fire Department paramedics who responded to the scene tried to save Jimenez’s life but that she died from her injuries at Ascension Mercy medical center in Aurora.
Arellano’s bond was revoked when he was found guilty, officials said.
