Aurora woman dies after being hit by pickup truck while walking across road

An Aurora woman died last Friday after she was hit by a pickup truck the previous day while she was walking across the road, police said.

Maria Herrera, 72, of the 1300 block of Solfisburg Avenue in Aurora, was walking across the road at the intersection of East New York Street and West Park Place in Aurora at around 5:45 p.m. on Oct. 3, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

The release, sent out on Wednesday, said Herrera was struck by a gray 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Responding officers found her with serious injuries, officials said in the release.

Herrera was taken to Ascension Mercy medical center in Aurora by Aurora Fire Department personnel and was later airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where she died from her injuries last Friday, the release said.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the Silverado’s driver was making a southbound turn onto West Park Place from East New York Street when he noticed Herrera walking eastbound, according to the release.

Officials said she was reportedly looking at her phone while crossing the street.

The driver attempted to stop but was unable to avoid the collision, which happened at a low speed, according to the release.

The intersection remained closed for several hours while traffic investigators reconstructed the crash, the release said.

Officials said the crash remains under investigation by the Aurora Police Department’s Traffic Division and encouraged anyone with information to call 630-256-5330 or email tips@aurora.il.us.

The DuPage County Coroner’s Office will do an autopsy to determine Herrera’s exact cause and manner of death, according to the release.
