Awards, scholarships presented during Aurora African American Heritage Board’s annual Heritage Dinner

Nearly 500 people attended the Aurora African American Heritage Board’s recent Heritage Dinner held annually during Black History Month.

The ceremony featured dinner, performances, dancing and a presentation of scholarships to local Black college-bound seniors who received $2,000 each and a brand new laptop computer, according to a press release from the city of Aurora.

Awards were given to standout members in the community, including college students, senior citizens and the Leader of the Year Award to Sheena Baker, a Realtor in Aurora, according to the release.

The theme for the event was “365 Black,” highlighting the need to celebrate Black history throughout the year, officials said.

Active shooter program for seniors

Aurora Senior Services will present a program for seniors on active shooter situations at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 8, at its center at 2111 Plum St. in Aurora.

All seniors living in the Aurora are invited to the free program, organizers said.

The North Aurora Police Department and the local Triad organization will be the presenters of the program, according to a press release about the event.

Weather forecasting in spotlight

The next NIU STEM Cafe program set for Sugar Grove will explore the past, present and future of weather forecasting.

The event, to be led by NIU Associate Professor of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment Vittorio Gensini, will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Fireside Grille, 49 Sugar Lane in Sugar Grove.

Northern Illinois University STEM Cafe events are designed to increase public awareness of the critical role that STEM fields play in our everyday lives, event organizers said. They are offered in partnership with the NIU Alumni Association and made possible with support from Bayer Fund, officials said.

Expungement clinic set for Aurora

An expungement clinic will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 20 at the Aurora Public Library, 101 S. River St. in downtown Aurora.

Kane County Circuit Clerk Theresa Barreiro, Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser, state Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, the Kane County Law Library and volunteers will be hosting the annual clinic.

The event is designed to help people learn what it takes to get criminal offenses removed from their Kane County record if they are eligible.

Volunteers will meet one-on-one with people to help them begin the expungement process on eligible offenses that occurred in Kane County.

DuPage Forest Preserve District holding career fair

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County will host a seasonal career fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at district headquarters, 3S580 Naperville Road, Wheaton.

Participants can meet with staff from a variety of district departments, learn about seasonal positions and interview in person. The fair is helpful for teens, retirees or individuals looking for seasonal summer work or a short-term commitment, district officials said.

Seasonal positions include boat or campground attendants, equestrian camp counselors, natural resources maintenance workers and rehab wildlife keepers.

Local high school chess teams excel

Aurora area chess teams placed in the top 10 at the state chess tournament held Feb. 9-10 at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria.

Of the top teams, students from Naperville Central High School placed sixth, Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora placed seventh, the Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora placed ninth and Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville placed 10th.

Also placing were Naperville North High School, 14th; Benet Academy in Lisle, 23rd; and Metea Valley High School in Aurora, 34th.
