A Bartlett man found guilty but mentally ill in the stabbing death of his 93-year-old mother was sentenced to 27 years in prison by DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin.
Edward Mitzelfeld, 69, formerly of the 700 block of Bryn Mawr Avenue, was convicted by Guerin in April of first-degree murder following a seven-day bench trial, a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said that on May 29, 2019, Mitzelfeld stabbed his mother, Frances Kelly, several times with a kitchen knife in the home they shared. The knife severed the woman’s aorta and entered her lungs, the release said.
Mitzelfeld called 911 to report the attack and met police with his arms raised in the air in front of the house.
“This heartbreaking case has haunted the Mitzelfeld and Kelly families for the past five years and with the final chapter now written, I wish them strength as they continue their lives without the love, support and friendship Frances provided,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.
“It is my sincerest hope that perhaps with today’s sentencing, Frances’ surviving family and friends will find some measure of closure and keep her memory alive in their hearts for a long time to come.”
