Batavia man charged with accidentally firing shots into apartment next door

A Batavia man has been charged with accidentally firing shots Wednesday evening into an apartment next door, police said.

Martin Gonzalez Jr., 35, has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and reckless conduct in connection with the incident, Batavia police said in a press release.

Police said they went to an apartment on the 1100 block of West Wilson Street in Batavia at 7:25 p.m. Wednesday after a resident said they heard a “loud pop” and found bullet holes in their wall.

Police followed the trajectory of the bullets to a neighboring apartment where they met with Gonzalez and another man, according to the release.

After an interview with the two men, officers determined that a gun had been unintentionally fired while being handled, police said. No one was injured in the incident.

Gonzalez was taken to the Batavia Police Department for processing and then was released.
