Berwyn police fatally shoot man wanted for triple homicide in central Illinois

Cops in west suburban Berwyn shot and killed a man wanted for a triple homicide in central Illinois after a Wednesday-night chase, according to authorities.

Berwyn police officers responded to the 1800 block of Home Avenue around 11:40 p.m. for a report of a man with a gun, the department said in a news release. The man escaped from cops on foot, then forced his way into a residence in the 1800 block of Wenonah Avenue. Inside that home he fatally shot two dogs, police said.

The man then fled eastbound into a yard in the 1800 block of Home Avenue. Police said the man disobeyed orders to stop and started shooting at officers, who fatally struck the man when returning fire. No officers were injured, police said.

Police believe the man — whose identity hasn’t been released — committed a triple homicide earlier Wednesday in Mahomet, a small village about 11 miles northwest of Champaign.

Mahomet officers found three family members with life-threatening gunshot wounds around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of Riverside Drive, Mahomet police said. One victim, 26-year-old Sara Mason, was pronounced dead at the scene. Janis Mason, 61, and Caleb Mason, 23, died at an Urbana hospital.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task force is investigating the case, Berwyn police said.
